Suggestions or Options to Assess Your Community Profile
NOTE: Some schools may already have this community information; others may find these suggestions helpful to collect community profile information or to help define your community.

Community Mapping Database
Preliminary data has been captured and storage has been completed for 97 percent of all NCAA and NAIA colleges. This database will help campus leaders develop strategies for providing useful information to community leaders and for identifying potential community opportunities.

Data included:
  • Basic statistics on size and composition of each school.
  • Basic statistics on the size and social characteristics of each school’s surrounding community, along with data on other colleges and universities in the area.
  • Geographic location of each school for use in mapping programs.

Institutional Research
Think about engaging your school’s research classes to learn more about your perceived community.
  • How many of your students grew up in the community?
  • What percent of your community are your graduates?
  • What percent of your donor base comes from the community?
  • What percent of your ACTIVE alumni association lives in your community?
  • Current perceptions about the school’s relationships with the community?
These data will help you focus on people most likely to already see you as community and be open to building more engagement with you.
